Dear Alan
me and my wife Shirley met you for a drink in Kempton Park over a year ago, we had a most enjoyable night if i remember. We have just got back to Joburg after a short visit to Rorkes Drift, Isandhlwana and my favourite Spion Kop 22nd 23rd and 24th Jan 05. Good dates to visit the battlefields. I must say all the monuments on the sites are still in good condition and had recently had a fresh coat of paint. Each time i visit these battlefields it always make my hair stand on end. Keep up the good work with the web-site i always find something new to read. Maybe we can share a cold castle next time you are in S.Africa.
Cheers for now

This site is the first real contact I've had with other Zulu War enthusiasts since I really started my interest in the early 90s.

To be able to get views on ideas and questions that I have been thinking about all this time and read the issues raised by others is absolutely fantastic.

There will always be an interest in this campaign, but equally this discussion forum.

Well done guys. I'll be visiting the site often.

One of the VC winners (John Fielding) is buried in my home town of Cwmbran. I've always been interested in this historical battle since I was a teenager. An excellent site.

Excellent site. I am visiting both Rorkes Drift and Isaldwna in February and the site has given me a good insight into the battles. Thankyou. Oh, and thanks for dispelling a few myths!

Always enjoy the articles and information. Excellent webpage. Need to see the movie Zulu and Zulu Dawn again. They are becoming more difficult to find as classic movies.

I have been an enthusiast of the battle of Rorke's Drift & the Zulu Wars since my school days in Brecon. I have visited the museum next to the M.O.D. HQ Wales many times & it is well worth a visit.Only a handfull of men escaped Isandhlwana.
Three of them were serving with a rocket battery? I know they had a few cannon but I would be most grateful if any one has any information on the "rocket battery"& what part of the battle was it used?
Your web site is very well written &
presented (Superb reading).

I found this site by accdent and I'm glad that I did. Without a doubt its the best of its kind that I've ever visited, particularly the personal accounts. Shame that so many of them seemed to die young after living through Rorke's Drift.

You are to be congratulated on a most excellent and informative site

You are to be commended for such an excellent, informative, well presented site. It was just what I was looking for. Very well done!

Your site is outstanding with its historical accounts of the Rourkes Drift defenders. Too soon we forget the sacrifices our defenders give in youth, and then are forgotten in their old age.

Lived in Natal for a while but, sadly, never got to pay my respects to the men of Rorke's Drift.

we just watched the movie Zulu for the umpteenth time and were wondering why the colour seargents didnt get a VC. We were wondering if they received any medals at all. I said I'd have a look on the internet and found your site. It's very good and we're going to have a good look around. By the way - not sure who's responsible for the memorable quotes from the movie but we think you've missed the best one - during the roll call Colour Seargent Bourne calls out Hitch. Theres no reply. CS Bourne says Hitch you're alive, I saw you. To which Hitch replies I am? Oh thank you. (may not be the exact words but its one of the best lines along with whats that shooting - a rifle hughes)

Having recently visited Brecon, the Military plaque in the Cathedral promped me to view this excellent website. A most comprehensive account of the days leading up to and beyond the battles which displayed acts of extraordinary heroism - by many.

Very interesting website. Watched Zulu Dawn and Zulu over the Christmas period for the umpteenth time.
Visited the sites on a guided tour. Very moving.

The dramatised version of the battle via the movie 'Zulu' was shown to me and others of my intake (32nd Class AAS Balcombe) as a training film to instill into us discipline and the observance of given orders by our superiors.
I once watched the film back to back one day as the depoicted engagement was awe inspiring. With your website it great to see real faces to the names portrayed.

My Great-Great-Great-Great Grandfather Evan Jones fought at Rorkes Drift too, I believe he was 15 - 17 years old at the battle also. He was given a middle, whihc sadly my family no longer holds, and he brought home the Union Jack which flew over Rorkes Drift.
