Events

Over the course of a year, there will be numerous events that will be of interest to enthusiasts of not only the Defence of Rorke's Drift, but also the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 as a whole. This page is designed to bring together these events into one place, so if you are planning an event that you believe may be of interest, please contact us.

To the right you can see the Die Hards re-enactment group practising the drill outside the National Army Museum in Chelsea.

Soldiers of the Queen - Investigates the wars of the Victorian era. This great period of imperial expansion is defined by conflicts such as the Crimean War, the Zulu War and the Anglo-Boer War. The Victorian Military Society has joined forces with the RE Museum to present what is sure to be a fantastic weekend for the whole family.

Evening of fellowship at the M.O.T.H. Shellhole/Club/Museum Gladstone Street from 1730 hrs

SATURDAY 17TH JANUARY 2009
a.m. Natal Carbineers exercise their right to the freedom of the Town of Dundee with a march past and band followed by the Umvoti Mounted Rifles (Grey town) the Natal Field Artillery (Durban) the Light Horse Regiment, and the Vrystaat Staats Artillerei.
Cultural handcraft market organised by the Dept. Agriculture outside municipal buildings
p.m. Demonstrations by the Dundee Die-Hards at Battlefields Country Lodge & Zulu Dancing Competition/Demonstrations
Followed by a Military Ball from 1930 hrs with the Natal Carbineers band playing at Battlefields Country Lodge.

SUNDAY 18TH JANUARY 2009
Optional Tours to iSandlwana and Rorke's Drift OR Blood River and Talana
Alternate Tour on first part of Fugitive's Trail to Anstey's stand near Mnzamyama Stream and Captain Shepstone' s Grave.
p.m. Cultural Evening at Talana Museum

MONDAY 19TH JANUARY 2009
International Conference on the Anglo-Zulu War at Talana Museum with Academics, Historians, Researchers and Authors presenting papers and answering questions.

TUESDAY 20TH JANUARY 2009
Optional tours to Hlobane and Kambula Battlefields OR Cannibal Rocks Iron-Age site Fort Bengough and Fugitive's Drift. Zulu Cultural Day at Ncome for High Profile International visitors and tourists.

WEDNESDAY 21ST JANUARY 2009
a.m. Contingent of troops leave for iSandlwana. Set up camp at Ezemvelo KZN Wardens post. Conduct "living history" tours of the site. Evening - beating retreat ceremony by Natal Carbineers Band, "bully" around camp-fire and overnight in tents for tourists. Star gazing, and tales around the camp-fire.

THURSDAY 22ND JANUARY 2009 - THE ANNIVERSARY
1000 hrs Wreath laying ceremonies and short prayer service at both iSandlwana and Rorke's Drift in turn. With Troops and Zulu "iButho" acting as Guard of honour.

Friday 23rd JANUARY 2009
Celebrity soccer match overseas Tourists vs Local All Stars
Tours to various battlefield sites by Battlefield Guides booked and requested by tourists at Information Office

SATURDAY 24TH JANUARY 2009
a.m. Half marathon – iSandlwana to Rorke’s Drift?
Tours to Spioenkop for the 109th Anniversary of the Battle, also tour Wagon Hill, Colenso and Siege Museum.
p.m. Street Party and Official Dinner at the Royal Inn Dundee.

SUNDAY 25TH JANUARY 2009
1000 hrs M.O.T.H. Annual parade at Rorke's Drift. Wreath laying at memorials.
1100 hrs Official tour of Rorke's Drift.
1200 hrs Living History display of Rorke's Drift Battle.
1400 hrs Lunch.
Other activities can be added as required.
