Where can I find the text of the order Durnford received from Chelmsford, supposedly written at 0200 the day of the battle? Is there a reference that discusses confusion over orders?

The Durnford Papers are held by the Royal Engineers' Museum at Chatham. There was an article 'Isandlwana and the Durnford Papers' published in 'Soldiers of the Queen' magazine No. 60 dated March 1990 by David Jackson and Julian Whybra. I regret I do not hold a copy.

Both the aforementioned are members of the Anglo-Zulu War Research Society, I can bring your e-mail to their attention for you. They should be able to assist you with the findings of their original research.

The RE Museum Shop may still have some copies of its small booklet "The Red Earth" which explained a special ehibition of Zulu War items of Royal Engineer interest, held there a few years ago. Part of the Durnford orders are reproduced as an illustration - the surviving original document has developed a few "holes" in the paper - and the (deduced) full text is transcribed. Worth telephoning them first to see if they are still able to sell one through the post: +44 (0)1634 82 2839 is the direct line
