Does anyone know why John Rouse Merriott Chard's third christian name is Merriott (my family name). Did he, for example, have either paternal or maternal grandmother's with this name, or - less likely - is there a link with the Somerset village of Merriott?

JRM Chard's great-great-grandmother was Elizabeth Merriott. She died 20th January 1793, age 60 years.

Don't know if that answers the question!!

Elizabeth's (see above reply) daughter was Honor Merriott and she married JRM Chard's grandfather, John Chard 7/5/1767 in Pitney Church, Somerset. She died 3/2/1783, at Othery, Somerset aged 37. The Merriotts came from Long Sutton, Somerset and probably derived their name from the village from where they originated, much as Chard's probably did from the Somerset town of that name, despite the pedigrees that appeared following Rorke's Drift that traced his lineage back to Cerdic,(pronounced Cherdic) King of the Saxons in the Dark Ages.
But back to Rorke's Drift - one of the defenders 25B/1178 Pte. Thomas Dawe was actually from the village of Merriott - coincidence eh?

Double Oops ! 1) - forgot to add 'Rouse' was his paternal grandmother's maiden name - she was the daughter of the Vicar of Othery, Somerset.
2) Rereading my reply above I have mis-titled John Chard - he was, of course, JRM Chard's GREAT grandfather not grandfather as stated.
