12th August 2001	Vereker By Alan Critchley In the film 'Zulu Dawn', on which subject we will soon be putting our opinions and review on site, Lt. Vereker (played by Simon Ward), accompanies Melvill and Coghill to fugitives' drift. He was not killed in the film, but what really happened to him? Alan

12th August 2001	Ian Woodason Alan, He was killed before getting anywhere near as far as the river - it is said that he got on a loose horse to escape but a native trooper told him it was his horse and so Vereker gave it up to him and perished. Check out his memorials on my website (URL above). There is a section on him in Tim Day's book of Anglo-Zulu War memorials 'But Burdens Shouldered' - and his father was qualified to be 'in the House of Lords' Ian Woodason

13th August 2001	Martin Everett Vereker was the family name of Viscount Gort - an Irish Peerage. Lord Gort (6th Viscount) won a VC in WW1 while commanding 3rd (Guards) Brigade in September 1918. In WW2, he commanding the BEF as the time of the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940.
