Date | Original Topic | 7th November 2002 | Soldier's accounts By Sally Clarke Having visited Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift earlier this year I would like to read accounts of the battles by those participating.
Could someone recommend the best book(s) to buy. | Date | Replies | 7th November 2002 | Julian Whybra There is no one book which gives them all, though I'm working on it. Norman Holme's The Noble 24th gives the accounts of the six 24th Isandhlwana survivors and various R.Drift survivors. Frank Emery's The Red Soldier gives others. Clements's The Glamour and Tragedy of the Zulu War gives some of the colonists' accounts. Ian Knight's books quote from various but do not give the account in full.Otherwise trawl through back issues of SOTQ, the AZWRS journal, or go the 24th Regt Museum, the KCAL or the British Library. | 7th November 2002 | John Young Sally,
I also recommend James Garland's excellent site "Victorian Voices" - on the links menu or direct at http://www.btinternet.com/~Albiecat/
