I am pleased that Rorkesdriftvc.com, in cooperation with Peter Quantrill and Ron Lock, have restored the grave of Colonel Durnford in Pietermaritzburg. The grave was in a state of neglect but not vandalised. It is now in a state which is fitting.

The project was financed by the three of us and overseen by Ron Lock.

I hope to display some photos of the work done.

See also Peter Quantrill's posting on this site of the 5th September saying the same but with further details of the work carried out.

It's superb to hear that Colonel Durnford's grave has been restored. When I was in Pietermaritzburg in March I was struck by how much it had been allowed to get run down, and it was a very sad sight. Whilst I was in South Africa I hiked up the Bushman's Pass trail to the sight of his skirmish in 1873 against Chief Langalibalele. I found the walk extremely demanding so how Durnford managed it on horseback with a dislocated shoulder amazes me. A truly remarkable man, his newly restored grave is a fitting tribute.

Excellent news. I know I'm replying to this a bit late, but I just started using the site at the beginning of this month.

As I have never managed to visit the grave, it is very pleasing to read details about this restoration, as I am a great admirer of the man.

Well done

A few of the recent topics have made me think about Colonel Durnford more than usual.

May I ask if you would please involve me in the upkeep of his grave, now or in the future, should any further restoration be required.

I'm unable to visit the grave personally and my finances are limited, but I would appreciate it, if you will consider including me, to assist in even just a small way, to show my respect.

Thankyou very much.
