wrong way round. Knight. |
6th August 2002 | Alan Critchley I believe that Peter Quantrill and Ron Lock in Natal are trying to restore Durnford's very neglected and damaged grave in Pietermaritzberg.
They have apealed to the Royal Engineers Museum in Chatham for funds to help towards the restoration. They have so far been unsuccessful and enquiries should be addressed to the RE Regiment.

8th August 2002 | Edward Bear You would be better directing your attentions to amafa in Ulundi (who have responsibilities under RSA heritage laws in KZN) and the UK Defence Adviser in the High Commission in Pretoria who has a discretionary fund to contribute to such contingencies. Berating Ms Williams is simply churlish |
10th August 2002 | Alan Critchley Edward,
no one was berating Ms Williams (churlish: being a surly clown). It was merely pointed out that there has so far been no sucess in contacts with the RE Museum with regard to Durnford's grave. If you know South Africa, trying to get things done out there is very difficult. Perhaps the RE would or should have contacted the people you mention.
Perhaps I'll point out your recommendations to Ms Williams when I phone.

12th August 2002 | Alan Critchley Apparantly, having spoken to a very charming Ms. Williams, the person to speak to is Colonel Lodge of the RE on 01 634 822 227 to whom she has passed on the details and photographs. But at the moment he's on leave. There is also a Mike McCaibe of the RE who appears to be quite interested in the case.

16th August 2002 | Alan Critchley futher to the previous correspondence, Peter Quantrill, Ron Lock (South African authors and historians) and myself have decided to fund the restoration of Durnford's grave.
There is therefore no point in contacting Col. Holmes on the subject unless it is to address the issue of other regiment graves which require attention.
I think it a worthwhile cause to consider a fund which would view worthwhile memorials to maintain as well as projects such as St. Vincents church at Isandlhwana which urgently needs remedial work carried out.
I would welcome suggestions.
