7th March 2001 | "Men of Harlech" Baritone Soloist By Windell driskell Can anyone tell me the name of the actor/ baritone/tenor who led in the rendition of "The Men of Harlech" in "ZULU" what has become of him? I find myself humming or whistling this tune quite offen. I have done some research on the song's origin and have discovered some very interesting facts. |

7th March 2001 | Diana Blackwell Private Owen was played by Ivor Emmanuel. I don't know what became of him. |
7th March 2001 | Peter Critchley It seems that he only made one film, and that was Zulu. The Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com) does have him listed, but no further information about him, which is quite unusual as they do normally at least tell you where he was born etc.
I shall keep looking!

7th March 2001 | Peter Critchley Windell,
It seems you are in luck! If you do a search on Ivor Emmanuel on Google (www.google.com) you will see many pages come up. It seems he has had a fairly distinguished career both before and after Zulu as a singer. There is even a CD of his "fine baritone" available! I found that on Boxman (www.boxman.com).

10th August 2001 | Vaughan Birbeck Ivor Emmanuel certainly was a fine baritone
and I remember him giving concerts in my home
town of Morecambe back in the 70's. I don't
suppose there's much call for Welsh baritones
in the film world but it's a pity he didn't
appear in more, his performance in 'Zulu' has
real charm.
Great website, by the way!

28th November 2001 | Jo Ivor now lives in the South of Spain.... I know this as my Mum used to be married to his son, but I have not seen him for many years..... |
31st December 2001 | Gareth Ivor sang in London's West End in musicals and was with the D'Oyly Carte opera for several seasons, singing Gilbert & Sullivan at the Savoy Theatre. He also played Broadway and had his own television series ("Land of Song") which was televised throughout the UK. He retired - some would say too early - to Spain where he's lived for many years. He lost a significant amount of money following a banking crisis (not sure if it was a knock-on effect of the Barings collapse) but is nonetheless happy. There was a charming documentary about him on Welsh television over Christmas and he's in good form! |
1st February 2002 | Hywel Ivor Emmanuel was (as your last correspondent notes) the subject of a recent Welsh-language feature programme on S4C. It included an interview with him at his home in Benelmadena by Ray Gravell. |
