Not sure if this'll help - The Zulu War: Then and Now. by Knight, I. Castle, I. On page 229, the bottom middle photograph is stated as being the last resting place of George MacLeroy, Natal Carbineers. Coll P.S. I'd imagine you'd be looking more for an actual colour photograph though of a wider view. Have you checked Jamie's site ? |

Thanks Coll,
I was aware of that, but as you say I'm looking for a wide shot of the location of his death site, which isn't his last resting place by-the-way. One for you North of the Border, MacLeroy: 'Son of the King' he was the line of both Wallace & Bruce. A fellow Scot, Surgeon-Major Shepherd, stopped to save him and paid for his act with his life. 'Isn't his last resting place' - are you meaning it's a cairn marking the spot of his death, but his body was removed and buried elsewhere ? As for Shepherd, wouldn't his body have been buried near this cairn ? Coll |

Coll,
Correct his body was recovered from the battlefield, and like your friend he was re-buried in PMB. Shepherd's body should indeed be buried near to the marker. John Y. |

John,
I noticed that in an archived thread you mentioned that George Macleroy's father (George Macleroy Snr, General Manager of the Natal Bank) disapproved of an unofficial engagement between his daughter Margaret and the Hon William H Drummond. I was wondering how you came about this information and/or whether you could point me in the direction of some sources that could help me look at this in more detail? Kind Regards Andrew |

Andrew,
The information is held in a private archive by a direct descendant of George Macleroy Snr., and was gleaned Margaret's journal for the period. If you would like to know more please pm me outside of the open forum. Regards, John Y. |
