Andy,

You just need a copy of Medical Officers of the British Army - Volume 1 by Sir Robert Drew - I only have volume 2 - 1898-1960. Try the Medical Services Museum - search on - www.armymuseums.org.uk

Falvey was born on 16 Apr 1852 and appointed a surgeon ranking as a Captain 4 Aug 1878.

There is one very brief mention in the operations diary of the Transvaal Field Force during the final Sekhukhune campaign:

On the 24th [November 1879] Surgeon Falvey arrived [at Fort Albert Edward].

There is no record, as far as I can ascertain, of his activities during trhe Zulu War January-September 1879.

I have found another reference in Hart's Annual Army List 1885:

Mr J.J. Falvey served in the Boer War of 1881 and took part in the defence of Lydenburg.

Andy,

There is an image of Falvey in a group photograph of the defenders of Lydenburgh. It has been reproduced in a number of works on the 1st Anglo-Boer War.

It is from a 94th photograph album held at the National Army Museum.

He appears to have spent the 1890s in England before moving to the Channel Islands as, by 31st March 1901, he and his family were living at the Colombier Manor farm of Enoch Biles in the parish of St Lawrence, Jersey.

With him were his Valparaiso-born wife, Alice (36, Br. subject) and his three sons Dermot (7), Hugh (3) and Charles (1), all born England. (Decennial census return, National Archives RG13/5310/81). It seems unlikely, given his movements in the postings above, that earlier returns will find him in the England & Wales census.

Great info Thanks Peter
Amazing how and old document can bring someone almost back to life!
This is why I find letters, autographs and medals more interesting than say cap badges. (mind you i like those too)

John, is there any chance you could name a book for me? I have been to the library, but here in Somerset, if it's not tractors or cider you don't stand a chance!

Regards Andy

Andy,

It is in Joseph Lehmann's The First Boer War published 1972. I'm certain it also appears in Michael Barthorp's The Anglo-Boer Wars: British and the Afrikaners, 1815-1902 ISBN: 0713716584, published 1987.

Andy,

Buried at Glasnevin Cemetery, unmarked grave

http://www.1879memorials.com/wbmedic/jjfalvey.html

I found this page comes up first on Google with the search criteria 'Falvey Zulu' - after you said you couldn't find anything on the web I was worried it might have somehow slipped through the 'net'!

Andy,

I mentioned the Drew book (Vol 1) because I knew the experts would give you most of the military service details - however Drew sets out all Surgeon Favley's medical qualifications.

Good to see you on the forum at last mate.
I'll be dropping in for a cuppa on my way to Weymouth next month. Please ensure that you have only the best Malt available otherwise I will post your "tractor/cider" comment on the noticeboard of Yeovil Central Library.
