I'm relatively new to this area of collecting, and I have a question for you all. What is the difference between the so called "Shako Plate" of the 24th and the "Helmet Plate" of the same regiment.

Cheers

Shako plates were designed for and intended to be worn on the headgear that preceded the well known white pith helmet (or "foreign service helmet"). As the foreign service helmet was fairly new in 1879, many were affixed with the older shako plates, in this case the so called "last shako plate" . There were several other plates worn on several earlier design shakos. The shako plate was smaller and of a less complex design than the new helmet plate. There are several sites that picture both as well as the diverse earlier shako plates. A shako, by the way, is a cylindrical hat with a visor to shade the eyes (almost like a top hat without most of the brim) and was made of either leather or cloth. It's all a somewhat moot point however, as plates of any sort were rarely worn in the AZW.

Other Ranks Helmet Plates of the 24th are extremely rare having been worn for less than 2 years - in 1881 they were replaced by South Wales Borderers Helmet plates. In 20 years, I have only ever seen one.

OK, it's been a while since anybody has posted here but has anybody been able to find a good source yet other than the Vietnam units that are flooding the market?

I'm even in the market for a good original wolseley helmet.

I got my first helmet, as a repro from Thin red line.

I don't know if they have them still, as the business is fasing out I believe.

I believe you're right, OC. The Thin Red Line appears to be expiring Sad I shamefully admit I've never purchased anything from them, but have often visited the site for information and pictures. It's a deep well of knowledge that I, for one, am going to sorely miss if it goes.
