By chance I happened upon this book on the net, not the contents, but the word on the cover, apparently meaning as stated above, located at sacred areas, and places of historical significance, which I think the term - �Throw your stone upon the pile� - was the concept of adding a stone as you passed.

Would the Zulus also call the cairns at Isandhlwana this in their own language, and was it known for visitors to the battlefield to add a stone to a cairn in memory of the fallen, in a similar fashion ?

A minor point but I did find it interesting, as not everybody would have flowers or a wreath in their possession to lay at the memorials -
