Gunga Din
By Rudyard Kipling You may talk o gin and beer When youre quartered safe out ere, An youre sent to penny-fights an Aldershot it; But when it comes to slaughter You will do your work on water, An youll lick the bloomin boots of I'm thats got it. Now in Injias sunny clime, ...... |

Alan,
One of my favourites of The Barrackroom Ballads, and the second poem I was able to recite word perfect as a child. Some lines from Kipling actually appear on the rear of dust jacket of Victoria's Harvest. John Y. |

I have a few of his works, some are heavy going but they are a mine of gems.

John et al,
The Barrackroom Ballads. Superb. When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains, And the women come out to cut up what remains, Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains An' go to your Gawd like a soldier. I got to[generally] fly over the plains, usually at 250'; I drove / walked over the mountains.... But always remembered Kipling's words. Interesting times! AMB |

John,
I agree, the presentation is excellent, and it's a great read. I prefer this format as opposed to those books where all the illustrations are all in one or two sections of the book. Congratulations on a fantastic book. Best wishes, Dewi PS Are you well now, after your illness? |

Is the museum selling them, although having been ignored by them, I'd be happy to buy a copy from somewhere else.

Alan,
I checked the RW Museum book list the other day, and Victoria's Harvest was not included on it. Helion's website is offering it at a discounted price. Other sites offering it at a reduced rate include EBay and Amazon. Dewi, I still have some major aches and pains, and I'm hindered somewhat by the limited use of my left hand. But other than that things are better than they were, thanks for asking. John Y. |

Victoria's Harvest is a great book, especially the illustrations. One stood out for me on page 231 of Archibald Forbes, whom I do know of, but it's the vast amount of medals on his jacket and round his neck that I can't get over. As a war correspondent was he awarded a campaign medal for every war he covered to collect so many decorations ? Not sure I could even begin to try and identify them all

Colin,
Thanks for your comment on Victorias Harvest, and I am glad that you like the illustrations. As to the engraving of Archibald Forbes most of his medals and orders were issued by the countries on which he reported. For example he wears the Prussian Iron Cross for his actions during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Others reflect his reporting from Serbia, the Carlist War in Spain, the Russian-Turkish War. However, one medal he is certainly not wearing this that for the Anglo-Zulu War, his claim for that was refused. Regards, John |

John,
I actually passed on your reply to myself about the medals recently on another forum, when an enquiry was made about similar regards Melton Prior if I recall correctly. Additionally, I tried to start a few topics based on what I read in your book, but they along with my others on randomly selected subjects were all mostly spoiled or given a reversed meaning, so never got them as far on as discussions as Id have liked.... |
