I have in my possession a medal belonging to the above named defender.

I have had this medal for many years since my father passed away

My Father owned this medal since the 80's

I have been in discussion over a few years and everyone has wanted to take this medal away from me to check its authenticity

I then got scared and sat on it

Last year I contacted Medal News who suggested some medal specialists for me to visit with the medal.

I have recently visited the 4 specialists suggested last month. They have confirmed that its no doubt a SA Medal but its renamed - the pawn marks are on front of the medal and they feel that as this was common practice in those days and his medal is still at large, this, albeit renamed and possibly not the original, belongs to him.

They were happy to put in an auction but I felt that I would prefer to take my chances on eBay.

Which is where it is today.

I look forward to hearing from anyone who has any knowledge on this medal.

Many thanks

Sally

Since the auction listing has ended with no bids I now feel free to comment. Sally, the vendor, was scrupulously honest with the description. The only thing that would have improved the auction listing was better images of the medal naming. Medal rims are notoriously difficult to get in focus, but all the information was present.

Medals are renamed for two main reasons:
The recipient lost the original
With intent to deceive (fraud)

To my eye, this has not been done with intent to deceive as there are too many inconsistencies with original naming:
Forename Robert abbreviated to Robt instead of an initial
The battalion has the suffix ND after 2 (2nd) when it should be the numeral followed by a dash or dot
The engraving script is Victorian style but not that used by the 24th

So was it Norris's medal? We don't know. It could have been done by him, a distant relation, or someone else. Without a confirmed link back to the recipient bidders will be wary of paying more than they would for any other renamed Zulu medal, which would be about 400. An original medal to an Imperial unit would be 550-650 and a genuine medal to the 24th (not to a RD/Isandlwana participant) would be 850+. So some way off 2,000.

But it's an interesting piece.

The re-listed medal sold as a Buy it Now for 2,000. Well done to the seller but I really cannot see how it is worth a fraction of that amount. It is a huge leap of faith for the buyer.
