Officers And The Ability To Sketch Terrain ?

Did officers need to learn how to sketch terrain, much like Crealock was able to, in order to identify areas later, use as reference, etc. ?

Not that I was a great artist, though did pass my exam at secondary school, my preference being able to draw still-life in pencil with shadows, etc., but also sketching landscapes.

If I was present in the AZW, would this ability, if known about, have been put to use during the campaign ?

Topography was a subject taught at Sandhurst. Each officer learnt military drawing, surveying and landscape drawing as part of the course while they attended the college. Examinations were held each term and officers had to achieve a 50% pass rate or better in each subject.
It was expected that any officer who had passed out of Sandhurst would be able to sketch features of the ground satisfactorily.
