Tony,
The uniform and the saddle are on display within the Muse du 2nd Empire, Compigne, France. They are held in an annexe to the main museum in the Muse de l'Impratrice and can be visited by appointment. John Y. |

This might seem a stupid question (or I might have missed something) but why has the Prince allowed someone else to wear his togs? Peter |

Peter,
However, do beware, those particular galleries are not always open to visitors, or in some cases are not fully lit. They are generally on the route out from the main visit, though do contain a wealth of generally interesting items. On a visit about 6 years ago items were only identified in the French language. The main weight of presentational effort goes into guiding people round the State and private apartments. Except at the high middle to upper end of cost it's also one of those parts of France where decent places to have lunch are very scarce. The local town offers few choices. G |

Peter,
That's because 'Rock' has been 'Fan-Editing' Pierre Turner's work, that's why! 'Rock,' There are a number of errors in your illustrations. The Gunner is post-1881 and the alleged K.D.G. likewise! If you are interested in the other errors pm me. John Y. |

Oh, I see. It's a great illustration - as are the others in the series - but I still don't understand why (or how) a strapping, well built, ginger bearded Anglo-Saxon would (or indeed could) squeeze himself into the Prince's campaign gear. Indeed, more to the point - would Louis have allowed this? And if Ginger has got hold of these togs somehow, what on earth is the Prince himself wearing, assuming he didn't have two of everything? Over the weekend I worked on this illustration to make the face more resemble that of Louis Napoleon.
I also found this wonderful website, that has a feature on Louis Napoleon. http://www.soldiersofthequeen.com/page5-SouthAfrica.html |

Yes, I like that website - some great photos. Relieved to see that Ginger has been good enough to return the clothes, as one doesn't like to think of the Prince Imperial being in a state of dishabille on campaign, however temporarily. Still a little puzzled. Perhaps I shouldn't be. But whose delightfully skilful original work is being exhibited here? Pierre Turner's or yours? Peter |

Peter,
If you believe some tour guides he was missing some of his uniform at the time of his demise! Rock, Can you do something using the attached photograph? Regards, John Y. |

Rock,
have you changed the original pic again? The comments following might again be confusing. |

Alan,
Yes. The original picture has been deleted because the face did not resemble the subject. The face is all that has been changed. The uniform is exactly the same. Forgive my alterations and this will be my last post. |

I hope you only mean the last on the subject...? |

what's the difference? |

It was reported that the Prince wore an older style Royal Artillery patrol jacket. Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the older and the standard 1879 pattern jacket. Thanks to all so far for the info. It's been very helpful.
Thanks Tony |
