I'm currently researching a Special Service Sergeant who served as senior NCO/Instructor (I think) in no 2 Sq MI and wondering if anyone can add any information.
Sergeant Joseph Edward Anderson 6th Dgn Gds
Colonial Office list 1889:
Volunteered for service in South Africa in 1878 and served in the mounted Infantry with Major Barrow CMG, 19th Hussars throughout the Zulu Campaign; medal and clasp. For which Services he received a Commission in 19th Hussars. Resigned Commission to take up present appointment of 2nd Class Inspector of Police, Mauritius, Aug 1880.
From London Gazette:
19th Hussars, Sergeant Joseph Edward Anderson,
from the 6th Dragoon Guards, to be Second
Lieutenant, vice G. R. Cuninghame, transferred
to the 4th Hussars. Dated 21st July, J 880.
Also:
19th Hussars, Gentleman Cadet Edmund Kendal
Grimstone Aylmer, from the Royal Military
College, to be Second Lieutenant, vice J. E.
Anderson, who resigns Ids Commission. Dated
llth August, 1880.
I found it surprising Anderson him being Commission from Sgt, I would have expected Sgt Maj. perhaps he held the Local rank of Sgt Maj but then again its odd the LG just gives him as Sgt. I know its not uncommon for senior NCO's to be Commissioned but this seems to be for specific services. however I can't see him mentioned in any despatches.
I'd found a couple of mentions of Anderson in various books (normally not by name), regarding him killing a Zulu at Gingindlovu but nothing else, so any thoughts would be most helpful.
