Fascinating. I wondered which one Ashcroft would have chosen as an answer to the boy's question. Impossible, of course, but if pushed to ask the same question, I thought mine would just have to be Sgt Norman Jackson, even though one could, of course, choose almost anyone. Imagine my astonishment when, further down, Ashcroft reveals he has that particular VC and it is one of his favourites!

There is some memorabilia relating to this VC in the Manston RAF museum a mile or so from here as the crow flies. Thanks for this story, Martin.

Hi there nice to see my great grandfathers name mentioned in dispatches. By The way are any other decendents invited to the sevice of rededication of the Victoria cross and george cross being held at St Martin in the fields church in Trafalgar sq next week ?
