One has to wonder how a dog wounded at Isandlwana managed to survive. With everyone fighting for their lives and the fugitives in an equally desperate situation, there would have been no one concerned enough to save a dog. If neither the guns or the Colours could be saved, then what would have been the dog's chances? And the impi killed cattle, horses and dogs left in camp after the battle. Those dogs that remained formed packs and had to be shot by a burial party. Perhaps its possible that one in the burial party adopted the dog but from my reading, the animals had been worrying the bodies and I'm sure the sight would have sickened the soldiers, not encouraged any fondness. Perhaps it is just another exampe of Victorian hyperbole.

Henry Degacher's Dalmatian dog 'Flip' survived Isandlwana and came in to RD on the morning of the 23rd wounded, where he was reunited with his master. As to how he survived - the dog saved himself of course. Dogs are good at that sort of thing. They also move away instinctively from the sound of high velocity gunfire - they can't stand it. By contrast to Flip Maori Browne's setter bitch was killed in his tent - pinned to the ground with an assegai - she may have been tethered.

Accepting most dogs' dislike of sudden and unexpected loud sharp noise, some can nevertheless be trained to remain steady during it. Gun dogs etc

But surely it's not being inferred above that the MH was a high velocity rifle in the conventional meanng of the term?

Only 16 years late to the topic, but Pat Daly's dog made it out, too.
