Is anyone clearer than I about the difference between "gilt" and "2% gold"? I have a turn of the century hussar officer's busby with what I would call gilt fittings and a set of newer (by far) caplines and it's my sense that all the aging in the world, artificial or natural, of the latter isn't going to match the colors. Is there a gold equivalent of "Staybrite" used today? Has the alloy used in gilding changed over the years? Expert testimony would be welcome.
