Dear Mikey,

The helmet appears correct with the soldier's 1868 shako plate - NO green backing. This plate for the Home Service helmet was replaced in 1880 - with a '24' helmet plate - and again in 1881/2 by a South Wales Borderers version - with dragon centerpiece. There are very few 1880 versions surviving - there is one in the museum (this is the only one I have seen). Even the Colour Party to Osborne House in August 1880 - the soldiers are still wearing the 1868 shako plate in their blue helmets. If you find a 1880 version let me know.

Thank you Martin,
I wish i could remember where i heard that the facing colour was placed
there so the numbers read in the regiments facing colours.
I guess, I've been wrong these last 20 years..

Thank you..

regards

Mike

Mikey,

The facing colour of the South Wales Borderers was white from 1881. Green was restored in 1905. BUT green backing was never worn with the 24th Shako or Helmet Plate.
