On visiting the cemetry in September at Helpmekaar, we got into a conversation regarding the Emblems of NNM which appeared to be IIIV on the grave stones. Can any on advise what the NMP emlem was ,we were able to recognise the Natal Cabineers OK but not the police.

Andrew,

I have a contemporary photograph of the N.M.P. graves at Helpmekaar.

It appears to be NMP in a wreath. I could send you a copy, or it appears on the K.L.H. site, if you want to look for yourself.

I also have a contemporary helmet badge for the N.M.P., I could scan that to you also, if it is of any help?

Helmet badge did not have the wreath, that was added when the NMP was transformed into the Natal Police in 1894. However, the Regtl emblem of the NMP was complete with the wreath (used on letter heads, etc). See the front cover of Holt's "The Mounted Police of Natal" (1913).

Andrew,

You're right in saying there was no wreath on the helmet plate, but there was on the contemporary pouch badge. However, that looks somewhat different to the wreath on the Helpmekaar graves.
