The question of the naming of locally raised native horse units was raised recently. Having asked some questions of brains far greater than my own, I have the following to add to the debate:

"A quick glimpse suggests that in the early stages of the war these units were generally referred to by their names – Edendale Troop, Zikali Troop, etc, and collectively as the mounted native contingent. This can be seen in Volume 1 of the Zululand Archive (page 282). This shows a list compiled in Dec 1878 which shows the composition of the Columns and under Durnford’s No 2 Column it lists ‘5 troops mounted n.c.’ I believe. However, it will take a lot longer to dig our chapter and verse. In the index of ‘The Buffalo Border’ it lists ‘Natal Native Mounted Contingent’. Thompson in his NNC book does not use the term NNH"

I hope this helps.
