Iíve recently acquired the book about Major James Francis Thomas, the man assigned as the defence counsel in the Breaker Morant trial.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ready-Aim-Fire-Execution-Lieutenant/dp/1925230503/ref=sr_1_5?crid=30TN2OKEC7AHR&keywords=breaker+morant&qid=1582818443&s=books&sprefix=Breaker%2Caps%2C152&sr=1-5

He was Ďdiscoveredí after a haunting photograph was saved from being binned, which showed him standing, hat in hand, at the joint grave of Morant and Hancock.

I donít think there were any high-profile military trials in 1879, but were there any standout British military lawyers from then, not so well-known.

Iím trying to get an idea of how big was the department of the British forces, or was it still in its infancy....trials left instead to Commanding Officers, etc ?

I visited the grave of Morant and Hancock in Pretoria some time ago.

There is an image of Thomas standing at the grave I think on Wikipedia, but Iím unable to add it here...Iíve not read the book fully yet, but apparently the executions of the men he defended, left him troubled the rest of his life...Iíd really like to think he Ďstood up to the British Empireí conducting the defence...as stated on another book.

Iíve not yet decided on the right or wrong of Morant...donít know enough

I had hoped to have a similar photograph of myself at Col. Durnfordís grave, as I consider myself as fighting another injustice for him too
