Good morning,

I did a search on the forum and couldn't find what I was after so I was hoping you may be able to point me in the right direction.

I'm writing a short blog post about the Rorke's Drift VC winners and would love to quote the original citations. Does anybody know where I can find them?

Thanks, Chris.

Chris,

Go on The London Gazette website, all the citations are on there.

As an example go to https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/24788/data.pdf

Where you will found C. F. Schiess citation in that issue of the Gazette.

War Office, November 29, 1879.
The Queen has been graciously pleased to signify Her intention to confer the decoration of the Victoria Cross upon the undermentioned Non-Commissioned Officer of the Natal Native Contingenf, whose claim has been submitted for Her Majesty's approval, for his gallant conduct during the recent operations in South Africa, as recorded against his name:

Natal Native Contingent
Corporal Schiess

Act of Courage for which recommended.

For conspicuous gallantry in the defence of Rorke's Drift Post on the night of the 22nd January, 1879, when, in spite of his having been wounded in the foot a few days previously, he greatly distinguished himself when the Garrison wre repulsing, with the bayonet, a series of desperate assaults made by the Zulus, and displayed great activity and devoted gallantry throughout the defence. On one occasion when the Garrison had retired to the inner line of defence, and the Zulus occupied the wall of mealie bags which had been abandoned, he crept along the wall, without any order, to dislodge a Zulu who was shooting better than usual and succeeded in killing him, and two others, before he, the Corporal, returned to the inner defence.

Chris,

The other option is all the Victoria Cross citations appear in my 1991 book They Fell Like Stones, which is not available as a Kindle book.

Chris,

Please do not refer to 'VC winners' It was not a competition, no 2nd and 3rd places. But a recognition of extreme bravery. The VC is a 'decoration', the highest British & Commonwealth Award, not a 'medal'.

Martin,

what do you think would be the correct wording? Is it awardees, recipients?
'Winners' is certainly the version used most by all sources, maybe for its simplicity.

In conversation I feel winner is used most often, as you say, straightforward, but when writing about such I guess recipient is used to give its correct official context, the latter being a word not used in everyday chat.
