I'm sure that those of us who met Pat Stubbs and remember Rob Gerrard
through staying at the Lodge will wonder what the full story is. |

Johnny,
I am happy to pose that question to His Majesty. There never was a palace planned for Isandlwana, it was a museum and cultural centre. I dont know where the story of palace ever came from apart from Chinese whispers. JY |

Indeed, John. Have you bumped into Ian Knight, by the way...??

Johnny,
Yes I have weve seen Ians tour party several times so far, and we will see them at Isandlwana in an hour or two. Busy day yesterday delivering a lecture on King Cetshwayos visit to the U.K., which appeared to delight both His Majesty and his uncle. JY |

Stephen,
I note that the term palace is used by the reporter, rather than in recorded speech. As a consequence of this report I have been in touch with Ulundi. I can confirm the development at Isandlwana is not a palace, it will be referred to as Isigodlo seMpi yaseSandlwana. This will comprise ten huts representing the amabutho who fought at Isandlwana and a larger hut which chronicles the life of King Cetshwayo kaMpande. There will be a Peace Memorial adjacent the unmarked graves that were discovered, and contrary to Johnny and Pats belief I am under the impression that they are those of men who fell at Isandlwana. All that said I still maintain my objections to the location of development, and I would rather it were relocated to the plateau. JY |

John,
I've had no joy with getting any further information from Ms Sensi Mafa on the development. Is there anywhere which more detailed plans and locations can be obtained? As to whether or not it's a palace, without knowing more, it may be that semantics are being employed. |

Thanks John,
I'm trying hard to work out where it is in relation to Isandlwana. It looks like NNW. But it also looks like it's on Ngutu??, At least, no where near the battle site. 'Guesthouses' are scheduled to be one of the items in Phase 2 although there was no description of any in the details. It says the land has not yet been acquired? If any forum members would like a copy of the plans for the Heritage Precinct, contact me. |

Alan,
The precinct is most definitely on the battlefield, literally on the other side of the AMAFA designated fence. A matter of yards from the advanced cluster of cairns. Some folk out there this week were saying that it might be a better option than to the village encroaching on to the battlefield. JY |

The Google Earth illustration in their literature gives no indication of the real position.
There is surely a better map of it? This doesn't bode well for the area to be used for the Phase 2 which will surely be close by. This really does all sound depressing. |

John, et al,
We have what we call Google journalists over here, who will grab screenshots off the Net and tweak it into fresh articles. I have a name for them, but Alan would not let me say it here. The story of the King's palace is a chinese whisper that rose to the top ever so often for the last few years already. I have told Ian Knight at least a year ago that any "palace" on Isandlwana will not be built in my lifetime. Or his. I will be there tomorrow. Need me to take any pictures of existing structures and or developments...? Our objections to this development mirror yours. I, however, beg to differ re the graves, John. Even Pam told me that they are most likely from the community, instead of battlefield remains, but I will gladly stand corrected. I am no archaeologist. Good morning Stephen Coan.....!!!!!! will send you an email soon...Terry is looking for you. |

Good morning Johnny,
Thanks the offer of photographs, but as I was there last week they would be unnecessary for me, but I am sure other forum members might appreciate them. As to the archaeological survey, I questioned that with KwaCulture last year without any of my issues being resolved. I forwarded the report to an archaeologist who discovered it to be flawed, and not without error. The question of the age of the human remains could easily be resolved by submitting them for DNA testing, however, it appears no such testing has ever taken place. If the remains are from local burials, as you contend, then an objection that is currently being considered by an interested party will have to be withdrawn. I have been assured that the excavated earth spills have examined and no artefacts have been revealed, something I find hard to believe. Just my thoughts. JY |
