This sad notification is provided by Alex Fox. Members will recall that Sally Fox is the
sister of Rob Gerrard, guide at Isandlwana Lodge, who died as a result of a vicious
attack in September 2016.
Sally was instrumental in the renovation of St. Vincents Church at Isandlwana, which
now includes a memorial to Rob who was also passionate about it. The Battle of
Isandlwana was fought on the feast day of Saint Vincent, hence the name.
It is with deep sadness that I must inform you that Sally passed away
in the early hours of the morning on the 27th of December.
I may have already contacted some of you, and some may have already
heard through Facebook or friends and family, however, mom had left a
request that all of you be contacted specifically as you were the
people most important to her in her life.
As you may know, Mom had been battling with sickness for a while and
when it was finally diagnosed as Lung cancer we were also told that it
was inoperable and too far along to justify chemo / radiation. We made
mom's last months as comfortable as possible and she spent the
majority of her time in her flat and attending to her Garden (which of
course looked beautiful!). Mom opted to stay in the flat rather than
go into hospice or hospital as she was far more comfortable there. We
arranged a full time carer for her during the day but she refused to
have assistance at night.
In the early hours of the morning of the 27th Mom fell asleep while
smoking a cigarette. The cigarette started a fire in the bookshelf
behind her and spread to the rest of the flat. I am very grateful that
she was unaffected by the flames. The paramedics told me that she
succumbed to smoke inhalation and would have gone peacefully without
any additional pain or suffering. The fire department were able to
extinguish the flames before any other flats or residents were
affected.
I will continue to be in contact regarding future arrangements for a
memorial services, which will likely be in mid - late Jan, but should
you have any questions or would like to talk through anything please
feel free to reach out to me.
I will always remember mom for her force of will and love of adventure!
Best regards
Alex Fox
