From reading the site and articles elsewhere, much praise is given to Commisar Dalton for coming up with the fortifications. My reason for starting like this will become clear. A few years back my late Grandfather handed me two books which relate to engineering defences for given situations (i used to partake in a local miniture wargaming society). The two books in question are titled "Fortification and Military Engineering Part I and Part II for Use at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich" Both books are first editions, part I was printed in 1884 and part II in 1886.

Both these books go into minute detail on when, where and how to erect defenses and fortifications for men and artillary. I know both these books were printed a few years after the events at Islandhwana and Rorke's Drift but i was wondering, would Dalton have received teaching's from books similar to these or would his idea's of what defense to erect at Rorke's drift come from previous events he was invloved in?
