Thanks for the Telegraph link - nice article although they also have fallen into the trap of not checking names as per "Melvile." I'm so grateful that I was able to visit FDL in 2002 although even then David was not the commanding presence he had been.

I did not ever see Rattray in RSA, but I did see a talk that he gave the OCdts at RMA Sandhurst in the early 2000s.

I must confess that when he started talking about the Gatling guns at Rorke's Drift I was a little surprised and rather put off.

You have to remember that he always claimed that he was a storyteller and not a historian, which might cover a multitude of sins.

Peter - thanks for that one - an amazing experience for all concerned and goes to show how a 50 year old film can still draw the attention - ingrained into the British sub conciousness - we had Johnson Beharry there, along with
Lord Ashcroft and Chard and Jones' VC, Surgeon Major Reynolds great grand daughter and a number of others who didn't get the reports that the 2 HRH's picked up - thanks for your comments on my chaps much appreciated - atb Tim
