Hi All
The Armitage letter should go on display in the Museum next week. After a long discussion with the owner we have decided NOT to publish a transcript nor sell photocopies of it. Once the transcript is done (maybe two months) access will be available in the Museum for serious students of the AZW. We will not be providing photocopies, nor allowing photographs of the full letter to be taken. As a "taster", I include one sentence: "It is not true about the mutilation of the bodies that we heard so much about in the papers at home". Lt Armitage was with the burial party following the return to Isandlwana. Bill |

Hi Bill.
I am sure all enthusiasts of the AZW are awed by the generosity of your mystery donor but why all the secrecy now that the Armitage document is safely housed at Brecon? As my old sparring partner has wisely put it "We'd be in a sorry mess if history was copyright according to the whim of the individuals ..." By shutting the document away and only approving access to "serious students" seems to me to be exactly what Mike is talking about. By whose whim will a student be judged serious or otherwise? Despite my curiosity, distance and expense puts an embargo on my visiting Brecon as I am sure is the case with all South Africans having a serious interest in the AZW. As for the "taster" ... Hmm? Ron Lock. |

All,
More in the local press: http://www.sussexexpress.co.uk/news/local/zulu-war-letter-fetches-7-000-at-lewes-auction-1-5877915 One hopes that a transcription can be made available, especially for those unable to get to Brecon. AMB |

Wow, this is certainly an interesting development...! Fancy me stumbling back onto the forum, and straight into the Armitage letter. I must say that I agree with Mike Snook and Ron Lock. How would you categorize a serious student of the AZW, and why do we not qualify....?

I would imagine someone who makes a written or telephoned request to see the document and who is willing to make the journey to Brecon indicates a seriousness. No?
