I'm sure that I read somewhere that even well into the 20th Century many Australians, especially those who had emigrated from Britain, considered themselves "British" rather than "Australian".

I think that the phrase "The Old Country" was still used until quite recently, as well. The large amount of Australians who fought in the First World War also reflected their ties with Britian.
