Peter, thank you so much for all the information, it is sincerely appreciated.
I knew nothing of the severity of his illness and yes, it's a remarkable coincidence involving the nurses!
I am guilty of not being an avid reader/researcher generally (I have the attention span of a Mayfly) but on each of the eight occasions that I've travelled to the battlefields, I am overcome to the point of unashamed tears, by the emotion and respect that everyone else displays. Those wide expanses of hills, grass and history form a huge part of my life.
Again, thank you.
Lovely day on Saturday at the headstone ceremony, very good turn-out and the parade was very, very special. Well done to everyone involved.

Best regards, Colin Fielding

What a wonderful ceremony and such marvellous weather! So pleased to see such a good turnout and everyone made so welcome. A fitting tribute to a brave man.

You're very welcome! It's nice to be able to add a bit to the story. There can be little doubt he was at death's door for a few weeks at least, given how many others around him were dying of the same fever. A tough man!

Really glad the ceremony and the whole day went off well. And thanks also to Martin and Alan for taking and posting, respectively, this excellent picture. Looks as if this memorial will fare better and last longer.

There was a very good repport on BBC Wales News last night at 6.30pm.

It included interviews with a member of the family (whose name I didn't catch) and one of the students at Llantarnam High School, who designed the new headstone. It also included some footage of the original ceremony and shots of the parade.

Hi all,

This is one of the photos I took of the parade at Llantarnam on Saturday, 20th April 2013.

Regards,

Dewi.

Yes, I agree. I'm actually demonstrating the Royal Engineers slow march and how it can be done with hands in pocket, without walking into a gravestone (despite the "please keep clear" sign)- not an easy task I think you'll agree ! Dewi clearly didn't realise that he had captured this magical movement !

Colin, from the expression on his face, clearly thinks I can't do it !

And, the CO 3 Royal Welsh is pretending not to notice !
