I'm a new member who is interested in learning how to use military records to supplement other original sources to develop biographical sketches and family history information. My forays into military records are just beginning, and they are not helped by being on the other side of the pond from Kew. So I'm trying to learn what I can and to figure out how to compensate for my inability to get there in person for the time being.

My interest at the moment is Private Frederick Hitch, about whom I've seen a number of references in the Forum, but I didn't see a "topic heading" with his name. If I overlooked it, I apologize.

I have tried finding reference to him in the WO 97 records on Findmypast, but have been unsuccessful which leads me, perhaps erroneously, to conclude that he may instead be included in the WO 116 records of Chelsea out-pensioners. If anyone could confirm or deny that, I'd be very grateful.

I saw from his record in WO 98 that his Victoria Cross was awarded 13 Aug 1879 while he was still at Netley. Is his date of discharge around this time, and could someone suggest where I could get the actual date?

If anyone could point me in the direction of other records on Private Hitch -- further pension records perhaps -- that I am overlooking, I'd be really grateful. I'm trying to figure out how to put all these records together, to not overlook something useful. Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

I am sure that some of my questions have been answered by Norman Holme's book The Noble 24th, but I've been unable to access a copy here (though I live in hope of inter-library loan coming through someday).

Thank you,

There are four copies of Holme on the website ABEbooks.com, the cheapest of which is $55.37 plus postage. You might be able to find copies on other sites, including bookfinder.com.

Also, just a reminder to all, it is the new headstone ceremony of John Williams/Fielding VC on Saturday. St. Michael and All Angels Church, Llantarnam, near Cwmbran. South Wales.

Thank you, John, for the welcome. I have read through the Hitch page. I thought at first you meant a folder that I had missed. I did read the messages related to Pte Hitch, but I may have got some out of order so I will go back and do a straight read-through now as I may well have missed some. Thank you for the link.

Keith, thank you for the suggestion about Holme's book on ABE books. I have requested it on inter-library loan through my local library, so I will wait and see if that is fruitful before buying a copy. Bookfinder is a wonderful thing!

Colin, thank you for the message. I will reply in kind. I wish you all a wonderful day at the headstone ceremony of your great-grandfather.

I appreciate the welcome. Thank you all.

Barbara,
have you tried the old forum on this site?

There was a website dedicated to Hitch compiled by a London cabbie.
Unfortunately it is no longerr up and running.

Yes, thank you, Alan. There is interesting material on the old forum. I'm compiling a list of all the bits of info and endeavoring to trace them back to original records where I can.

I'm sorry the website done by the London cabbie is not online any longer. Perhaps I can track it down with the "wayback" machine function. I'll have a look. Thanks for mentioning it.

Happy to report that Inter-library loan has come through and Holme's book arrived today. I am making a list of original records to seek for when I actually get a chance to visit Kew. It's a start.
