Someone has sent a set of pics in a form I haven't seen before.
Thought you may be interested. I'll have to look int the process.
Might be useful.
Just click on an image until you get the pic show
(Ignore the bloke's spelling of Rorke's Drift).

Hmmmm... Maybe it's for the intended recipient only.

And I as well! Only that single sentence. Ahah-- the game's afoot! Who sent the pics? What was the motive? Curiouser and curiouser.

Not difficult - you have to be a member of Skydrive (Microsoft) - see sign-in box in top right-hand corner of screen.

Saw,
the pictures are nothing special. They were send to me by my brother from a friend
who spends a lot of time in SA. I was really only trying, in this case, to see if there
was a way of posting images which avoids complication.

May also be a case of Mac vs PC. Mine is a Mac. (With fries and a Macslurry)

Thanks Alan. Viewable now - enjoyed them, some nice views.

Am I the only one who finds the brightly painted cairns strike a rather jarring note? No doubt they have to be maintained or they might disappear in time but they seem to take a long time to weather - unless they're being repainted more often than I thought. They're not the most attractive feature of the battlefield (all painted white, I mean) although I suppose they do stand out when the whole field is viewed from afar. And I see now even the obelisk in the cemetery at R/Drift has been surrounded by stones which have been whitewashed. Ugh! Reason, anyone? And Rorke's grave itself - don't remember that being surrounded by white boulders before but I supppose that was done when they revamped it in recent years.

Some of the memorials are beginning to look quite ugly & obtrusive - almost worse than being delapidated or uncared for. Hopefully no more are planned for these sites as not many of them are very attractive or in keeping with their environment (even allowing for the use of local materials & labour, remote location & vernacular style). Those raised in 1879 or 1880 have every excuse but even the 24th memorial at Isandlwana (1914) is a disappointment. It looks fine in the contemporary dedication photos of that time but I gather sub-standard materials were used and that maintenance is difficult.

I suppose I'd be in a minority of one if I suggested clearing the whole field (including even the cairns perhaps) and returning the site to its appearance before a single bell tent was raised. With stout fencing protecting as large an area of the battlefield as possible - at least as extensive as the present fence, keeping the increasingly threatening sprawl away? (But then I don't live there!)

Please thank your brother and his mate!

Peter

Having looked again, I wish I had the whitewash franchise there. I must do a comparison with pics I took a while ago.

Judging by the difference over 10 years, it seems to me that they've gone a little overboard on the changes.
Perhaps in another 10 years we'll see an air-conditioned plastic dome over it.

The whitewash is jarring to the eye, but better than the graves/memorials being neglected I guess. Maybe a lighter grey colour might have been better, than painting them so brightly.

You've done your brother and his friend (and the pictures) just a bit of a disservice by saying that they "are nothing special"! I'm very fortunate in having "been there" and I am sadly never likely to get there again. Still, there are perhaps more than a few visitors to this site who want and need to know what it looks like "today". But you knew that anyway--you just let humility cause you to turn a phrase badly. Wonderful pics! I just went back...
