Hi everyone

I expect there are many readers of this forum that know Dalton (Lindizwe Ngobese) who works at Isandlwana Lodge.

Dalton is getting married on Saturday 22nd September at St Augustine's Church.

It would be nice to bombard him with good wishes e-mails - I'm sure he can be contacted c/o The Isandlwana Lodge - [email protected]

At St Augustine's! That's wonderful ! His direct antecedent, Sihayo kaXongo Ngobese, would probably not have approved, given that St Augustine's would certainly not have been built had not Sihayo himself been turfed out by the British in favour of the Tlokwa chief, Hlubi kaMota Molife. I dare say Mehlokazulu kaSihayo would have been equally unimpressed.

However, there is no doubt that Archdeacon Charles Johnson, who built that church and several others in the vicinity - and who certainly knew Dalton's direct ancestors intimately - would rejoice. And so would Rev George Smith, without whose establishment of the original St Augustine's mission at the Tlokwa settlement near his own parish churches in Estcourt & Weston (Natal) in 1875, no transfer of the mission, lock stock & barrel, together with Hlubi's people, could have occurred in 1880. It might seem to some that St Vincent would be the more appropriate venue but, both historically and symbolically, St Augustine's has an equally apt claim. And if we must - and do - acknowledge the injustice to the Ngobese, perhaps we can also recognise a conciliatory move here by Dalton - or perhaps he just needed more room in the larger church for his guests!!!

No doubt earlier Ngobese relatives have also tied the knot at St Augustine's, but this announcement really does give the appearance of the neat completion of a circle!

Although actually taking place at St Vincent's and not St Augustine's, it was in many ways an equally appropriate church!
