On a day when we are focusing on the Olympics, perhaps......a bit trivia...

It has been reported that residents in Gloucestershire have been asked to keep their eyes peeled for wandering wallabies.

In the past few days, Gloucester police have received a number of calls from members of the public reporting sightings of a wallaby or kangaroo on the A40 near Highnam. The majority of sightings have happened at around dusk and dawn officers said.

A police spokesman said 'Inquiries are being made with local organistions to establish if any marsupials are missing. In the meantime, drivers are advised to take extra caution travelling through the area'.

So if you thinking of visiting Pte Henry Hook's grave at Highnam in the next few days be warned and take extra care.

As he might have said: "What do I know about wallabies .... I've never seen one of them walking down the main street of Highnam!!"

Sorry, I'll get my coat ... it's the sun!!

Speaking as an Australian, allow me to say that only female kangaroos and wallabies are referred to as marsupials - male animals are parsupials! Smile

I'm sure the police spokesman obviously knew that, and the animals sighted were therefore female.

In the Isle of Man we've had a breeding colony of Wallabies in the "wild" for several years now. A few made their escape from the local wildlife park and have successfully survived all that the British winters can throw at them. They are normally quite elusive and there are only occassional sightings, so I wouldn't worry too much about them turning up in the centre of Highnam.

Cheers,

Barry

I left the UK in July for a short holiday and needed to double check whether I returned on 1 April. Bizarre.
