Hlobane courtesy Paul Naish. (Copyright.) Well annotated and a great help in understanding this complex action.

Excellent aerial image, with positions clearly marked. Quite timely for myself, as I'm currently re-reading Blood On A Painted Mountain.

As you say it's a complex battle to follow. Worth the trek along the summit of Hlobane, but for anyone unable to do so, Paul's image is the next best thing!

Nourse was about a mile behind the RB according to his testimony.

Yes. It was just an idea to scale down the area of search.

Triangulation might give results -

Point A - the camp, the line from which leading from the nek along the track to the East.

Point B - namely the notch, including its whole length in the search area.

Point C - a point on the track where it is unlikely Russell advanced further than.

Then using metal-detectors, or the geo-physics equipment, scan inside this triangular zone - if anything, it'd be better than guessing.

Additionally, if using geo-physics equipment, scan the camp area, for any trace of its true position and tent areas - a long shot, but if having the use of this equipment, it'd be a worthwhile attempt.

Sounds like a job for Professor Tony Pollard, possibly assisted by that geezer who used to be in Blackadder.

So killing two birds with one stone, perhaps.
