Yes. It was just an idea to scale down the area of search. Triangulation might give results - Point A - the camp, the line from which leading from the nek along the track to the East. Point B - namely the notch, including its whole length in the search area. Point C - a point on the track where it is unlikely Russell advanced further than. Then using metal-detectors, or the geo-physics equipment, scan inside this triangular zone - if anything, it'd be better than guessing. Additionally, if using geo-physics equipment, scan the camp area, for any trace of its true position and tent areas - a long shot, but if having the use of this equipment, it'd be a worthwhile attempt.
