Each anniversary my thoughts turn to the fallen, and how they must have felt in the final hours and minutes of the battle. And every year I find the conduct of Standish Vereker quite remarkable in giving up his horse so that a black trooper might live.

Did he really think he could find another horse and escape? Or did he make a conscious decision to stay and die with his colleagues?

For the first time today it struck me that there could be any number of families living in South Africa and elsewhere today because one man escaped on a horse given to him by a white officer.
