Hi All. I am searching for a Johnto or Ianto Kelly who I believe was in the Scots Guards in 1888. He would be from a Limerick family who moved to Wales. I have found the following in my copy of Norman Holme's The Noble 24th.

Kelly J. 2757 Private
South Africa medal without clasp
Sent to Woolwich 14/7/1881

Why would this soldier be sent to Woolwich? Anyone any ideas?

I am writing an article and any help appreciated. It is not a genealogy question.

Basically I am trying to see if he changed regiments for some reason.

The medal was sent to Woolwich! This was the Mint. Not the man - perhaps they could not contact him in 1881.

Why not write to Regimental Headquarters Scots Guards, Wellington Barracks, Birdcage Walk, London SW1E 6HQ - they still hold their own soldiers papers?

25B/2757 - James KELLY - came out with a draft in July 1879. Originally from the 2nd Battalion 12th Foot ( Bury St Edmunds).

Thanks very much Martin for clearing up the Woolwich problem I had. Very much appreciated and I think I can cross this soldier from my list. Scots Guards have given me a few leads in the past to be fair to them. Thanks again for the reply.
