Zulu & Basuto Wars Including Complete Medal Roll 1877-8- |

The third in a series, the previous two being to the Light and Heavy Brigades.
Previously, if you wanted a copy of the medal roll and did not have the opportunity to go to Kew, the choices were limited to a CD and an out of print version of the roll by D R Forsyth. The Forsyth roll was around 100 and the CD probably less than 10 now. I have both. I don't have Dutton's Zulu book but if it is to the standards of the first two it will be good value for money. I'm fairly sure it's available through multiple sources including the author, who, incidentally, is the custodian of the medal to Pte Bushe. Peter |

Peter,
One wonders what addtl info Dutton has found that Forsyth did not put in his. AMB |

Forsyth was just a medal roll, plus the qualifying criteria for the medal. Dutton includes some biographical details, unit histories, medal provenance etc.
It's good value and I would buy it if I didn't have Forsyth. I'll probably end up buying it anyway. http://www.medalcollector.co.uk/pdf/zulusample.pdf Peter |

I remember Julian saying some years ago that Forsyth was far from being complete or error free. P. |

Beware some medal rolls are becoming available on-line on FindMyPast - you can see the original handwritten entries - rather than Forsyth's transcriptions.

The advantage of the printed roll is that it is very handy for a quick check. The CD takes a while to load, is occasionally difficult to decipher and not indexed. But it is the original source.
