Hello,
The 1878 pattern Home Service Helmet has a cork body and is covered in a plain drill cloth, blue for line infantry (inc 2-Queens) and green for rifle regiments. |

It's my understanding that "drill" is actually a wool blend, but can anyone be a bit more specific? Is it wool blended with another material, cotton perhaps?

Drummer Barry, yes, Sawubona is right I think. Drill is usually a cotton cloth and can be blended with wool. Cotton drill was also used for service Khaki uniforms.
If you are in Aldershot you could pop into Glover & riding on Queen's Avenue (if they are still there), they will be able to assist you with the correct colour as it is still used on present day Home Service helmets. I think the cloth manufaturer may be Haimsworths (Abimelech Haimsworth). |
