Looks like it is a drum, going by the colour plate in Ian Knight's book.

Martin Everett and John Young may be able to assist you with any questions about insignia, uniforms, etc.

Kelsard,

Yes it is a embroided drum; with a white drumskin & white drum chords on a red drum.

thanks Coll and John.
John as Coll suggested do you know of a book or website with info on insignia.
i am working on a model of capt. Younghusband's last stand at Isandlwana and need to know the difference between his cuff insignia and lt hodson [if they differ in any way] or did collar insignia differ.
many thanks

Kelsard,

Why not do Younghusand in a scarlet unlined patrol jacket, and Hodson in a blue patrol jacket? Then you haven't got a problem, as officers below field rank didn't wear insignia of rank on the blue patrol jacket.

Insignia of rank on the collar, if both in scarlet: Lieutenant - a Crown; Captain - a Crown & Star.

There is no website, that I know of, which contains such information.

seems the red for Younghusband blue for Hodson is the way to go.

just one last favour do you think Hodson would have carried a sword in the field . Embarassed

Kelsard,

I'm sure that he would have done so.

That being the case the sword belt & slings would have been worn underneath the skirt of the patrol jacket.
