Simon,
Like Coll I think I have identified them, and if I am right the chap in the middle, with his back to the door, should have a spear mark in his helmet, and a slight head wound because of it. John Y. |

Simon,
Very impressive. Are you signing up to Osprey Publishing for future work? AMB |

AMB,
looks like it, I'm negotiating with them at the moment as it happens, but the theme will probably be ww2 to start with. I guess most of the Zulu war themes have been covered. regards Simon |

That's hugely interesting news about Osprey. I've recently put a couple of suggestions in their 'Books I'd Like To Read' section, hoping one or both are selected next Sunday to be voted on. Although, they were for the Graphic History Series. However, I did add suggestions for the Campaign Series too, which I don't think have been included in it yet. Coll |

Simon,
Zulu War covered? Come, Sir, Ian Knight (& one or two others) must have at least another book or two yet to be published!! Then there are other colonial wars to be dealt with. What about Rhodesia 1893/96/97, for example? Lots of M-Hs to be drawn, and the odd maxim. AMB |

AMB and Coll,
I personally would like to see a book about Victorian VC winners, perhaps entitled something like 'Victorias Heroes: VC's of the Victorian Wars' not sure how many awards that would cover (anyone know?) but there is a broad canvas of conflicts which would be interesting. regards Simon |

I don't know much about VCs, but I think there were more awarded in the 19th Century, than later. Different ways of conducting warfare was suggested. So, that could mean quite a few. Are you considering one book, or a series ? I've punched in the following at Osprey for their Campaign Series - Camerone 1863. Maiwand 1880. Mirbat 1972. Coll |

Simon,
I'll volunteer to do the text for such a project! Turn it into a series V.C.'s of southern Africa; India & Afghanistan; China & Japan; Egypt & the Sudan; New Zealand; the Crimea & the Baltic; West Africa & the other more remote ones suchas Canada & the Andaman Islands etc., & etc.! Great potential for various uniforms & foes alike. John Y. |

Dear All,
A two volume book covering all those awarded the VC and GC - sponsored by the Ministry of Defence is due to be published toward the end of year - the publisher are Methuen - a name connected with Africa! Going back to the painting it is very fine - but I suspect the uniforms after some 11 months on campaign would be a little worst for wear. Many AZW paintings and for that matter the film 'Zulu' show uniforms in parade ground condition. This was far from the case. Most soldiers had beards. |

I understand what you are saying about the uniforms and lack of beards in the painting, but, as with 'Zulu', it is still a clear representation of a certain scene(s) through an artist's viewpoint. I like this painting very much, being able to identify the men within, the central stand-out image of Hook, excellent, exactly as I'd like to envision all the men at Rorke's Drift - cool, calm and professional.
