Greetings:

Does anyone know which magazine/periodical the following article appeared in, along with its date and pages:

"Gatling Guns in the Zulu War: Early Firepower on the Battlefield," discussed by J. Thompson. Uniform illustrations by Bob Marrion/James Thompson.

I have been in contact with Mr. Evans, Librarian, Royal Artillery Library, but he is unable to answer this question as his library holds only an unlabeled "poor photocopy" of the article.

As usual, any information would be greatly appreciated!

Best wishes,
Harold Raugh

Harold,

I could ask Bob Marrion, but I think know the answer; he will not be able to remember. I'll call him tomorrow.

I wonder given the pairing if it wasn't Dispatches?

Hi John,

Many thanks for your prompt response. I am not familiar with Dispatches or its contents. Perhaps, again looking at the pairing of author and illustrators, it could be Military Modelling?

Thank you for helping out with the search!

All the best,
Harold

Sorry Harold,

I should have written The Despatch the Journal of the Scottish Military History Society, rather than Dispatches, but I've just checked their 1879 content to no avail. Mil Mod is a definite option but again Bob could be struggling with chapter & verse, we'll see.

Otherwise try http://www.scottishmilitaryresearch.org.uk/index.htm I see George Robinson is writing on there, he is a near neighbour of John Thompson, in Edinburgh. You could try your VMS contacts as in my day those two were stalwarts of the VMS.

Regards,

Hello John,

Thank you very much for your prompt response.

I did leave a query at the Scottish Military History website, and I am also actively using VMS channels on this project.

Thanks again,
Harold

Harold,

Exactly the response I expected from Bob, he can't recall, at best he can say at least 15 years ago and in Military Modelling. He promises to look their his files though.

John Thompson has, according to Bob, quit these shores for British Columbia within the last six months.

Sorry best I can do for now,

John Y.

Hi Mate

I spoke to my Dad last night who will have this (somewhere), I'll see if he can dig it out for you and I'll scan it.

Cheers

Hi

I saw my dad tonight and he's had no luck - he spent a fair few hours in the loft and didn't get any joy. Sorry
