Zulu is much loved on this forum. Non-enthusiasts may not share our admiration for this work though. Peter Davis in his book on South African cinema was quite scathing of the ending of Zulu. He said it creates images of the Sharpeville massacare which occurred a few years prior to the filming of the movie. He felt the images of black bodies and white men with guns was evocative of the whole apartheid myth of the dangerous diabolical black other and the civilized white man. Maybe this is why the movie is not as popular here as it is elsewhere in the world.

And, of course, the filming took place immediately before and perhaps even during the first part of the Rivonia trial, which must have concentrated a few minds, even though some distance from Pretoria!
Incidentally, in most counties BHM usually puts on some very good events across the country each October, so it may be worth those in the UK looking to see what's happening in their locality, searching by county. Peter |
