well spotted but according to my refs, and unless they are wrong, the steel bowl hilt replaced the three bar hilt on the 1853 sword in 1864.
see page 17 British Cavalry Equipments 1800-1941- Mike Chappel-Osprey.
best regards

Hi Guys.
According to the Osprey book entitled British Cavalry Equipments
1800-1941,Lancers used the 1864 pattern sword, which basically was an
1853 pattern sword with a different hand guard.
1864 pattern sword - steel bowl hand guard
1853 pattern sword - three bar hand guard
The 1864 pattern sword is the one I`m using with the 1/6 scale 17th Lancer
figure that I am putting together at the present time.
Regards.

Simon,
A textbook case of opening my mouth before opening my book! You're quite correct and I should have paid more attention to the scabbard than I did to the handguard. If I had then maybe I would have noted that the rings as pictured are right for the '64 and not being one on each side as was the case with the '85. And thanks for the expanded input, Jeremy.
