Zulu shield? |

Does anyone know where I can buy a Zulu shield? An isiHlangu would be nice, but not necessary. I'm not looking for a 19th-century artefact: though interesting, they do tend to be a bit manky
(like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Superb-Zulu-War-Shield-Early-mid-19th-Century_W0QQitemZ220111809943QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116) - a modern one made in the traditional style would do fine. Thanks, Paul |

The shield to which you referred on eBay lacks the pole to which the cow-hide is lashed. Thus it is not stretched and so looks a bit rough. It would probably be despatched rolled up. I have been in contact with Pat Rundgren in Dundee, KZN, from whom I bought a beautiful iWisa (knobkerrie) some years ago. I'm sure he would be able to point to a supplier, if not having any himself. You can email him at [email protected]. KIS |

First, a bit of advice for those considering purchasing one from outside the UK - http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/UK-Buyer-Guide-when-purchasing-Zulu-Shields_W0QQugidZ10000000001396023 Some offers from outside the UK - http://www.africancraftsmarket.com/Zulu-shields.html http://www.rrtraders.com/shields.htm http://www.hidesofafrica.com/Products/ZuluShieldsDrums.aspx [This one's going out of buisness] - http://www.spyglassgifts.com/products_list.php/info2/African%20Shields https://africangame.com/store/Zulu-Shields-P269C0.aspx Just for general interest's sake, the illusive Zulu battle axe and other weapons (much better than my repro iklwa!) - http://www.ezakwantu.com/Gallery%20African%20Weapons%20-%20Southern%20African%20Weapons.htm Best Michael |

Gentlemen, thanks - I'll contact Pat and see what he has.
Mike - thanks for the useful heads-up about imports. Some of the examples of shields in the links you provide look suspiciously machine-made, don't they? I'd rather avoid shelling out for something that was made in Taiwan or somewhere. Regards to all, Paul |

Thanks for the heads-up, Peter H: it's not important to me that the shield I buy has bullet holes in it.

If you change your mind about that, I'm sure Neil would oblige. .45 calibre holes to be authentic of course.

Ha ha, I like that Simon, I'd love to help, but I got a telling off for firing at a 2/3rd size printed zulu that Kevin Price got for me @ 100 yards at the range. After I had put three through the blighter the Range officer came raging over in a mortal funk as I was shooting at a target not approved by the NRA!,... killjoy!.
And, yes all three rounds he'd be reaching for the savlon!. Is that Johnny still selling them from the hut at the end of the lane from fugitives?, If he did a shipping order we'd make a mint!. Neil |

Hi all
There are pictures of two of these shields in Ian Knight's "Brave Mens' Blood" and in John Laband's booklet "Battle of Ulundi" Bill |
