To partly answer my own question, on closer inspection, with a magnifying glass, the thing on the stock is a leather cover for the sight, presumably to stop it snagging in a carbine bucket. Seems to have a brass stud on the side of the weapon for the cover to attach to.

There is nornally two patterns of swinburn that was carried, the pattern shown on the sales link, foresight cover, longer forend and bowie style bayonet lug, IMI.
Photo evidence of the colonial mounted troops showed they had the shorter "sporter" style Swinburn, take a look at the forum post I did (page 2). Neil |
